Abelardo De La Espriella, a lawyer stepping into politics for the first time, seems to be heading for a narrow win in Colombia’s presidential race. His potential victory represents a challenge to leftist ideologies and signifies another triumph for the right wing in Latin America.
On Sunday, Mr. De La Espriella cast his vote in Barranquilla. His transformation from Miami lawyer to a populist figure, easily recognizable in soccer jerseys and straw hats, has garnered significant support. Preliminary results indicate he secured around 49.7% of the votes. Iván Cepeda, a noted leftist senator and advocate for human rights, received close to 48.7% with over 99% of votes counted.
This outcome may signal a return to conservative leadership for Colombia after the four-year tenure of Gustavo Petro, the nation’s first president from the left. It also aligns with Latin America’s broader rightward drift during President Trump’s second term.
Mr. De La Espriella, 47, conducted a highly dynamic campaign. His approach included dramatic effects such as machine-generated flames and A.I. enhanced videos featuring tigers, his chosen mascot. His charismatic persona drew crowds, especially with strong anti-Petro chants. His campaign promised an aggressive stance against the left in Colombia, including calls for the Trump administration to target political adversaries. Critics have labeled him as potentially autocratic.
His political platform involved commitments to enhance national security amid rising crime concerns, rectify economic issues, and address corruption. These ideas resonate with the current wave of right-wing leaders across Latin America.
