Trump’s Truth Social Premium Service Raises Concerns

2 weeks ago 0

President Donald Trump recently showcased a copy of his Truth Social post about Air Force One while speaking with media aboard the aircraft on July 8, 2026. His media company is now charging investors for early access to posts on Truth Social, with fees reaching up to $100,000 per month. This move has sparked ethical and legal concerns.

Critics claim Trump learned an important lesson during his first term: maximize financial opportunities. Despite amassing $2 billion largely through cryptocurrency ventures, his latest offer from Trump Media & Technology Group stands out. The firm promotes a premium version of Truth Social, offering traders early access to influential users’ feeds, including those of the president.

Starting Saturday, trading firms can access the “Truth API” for up to $100,000 monthly. This allows advance views of market-moving announcements concerning economic policy and global affairs. Customers have reportedly begun signing up. Such access could benefit institutional investors, particularly in high-frequency trading where milliseconds can translate to millions of dollars.

A Wall Street executive criticized the move as “insane,” expressing reluctance in adopting the service due to its perceived criminal nature in another administration.

NPR reached out to major finance players, including brokers and hedge fund managers, but many declined to comment, fearing repercussions from the Trump administration.

Legal Concerns and Criticisms

Securities experts are highlighting potential legal violations. Renée Jones, a former SEC official and professor at Boston College, questioned the legality of the service, referencing insider trading laws. She highlighted federal securities laws that disallow exploiting non-public information for trader advantage, stating it breaches “a duty or trust of confidence.” If Trump’s posts provide an advantage before reaching the public, the information is misused, violating trust and confidence.

While social media companies often sell specialized data access, legal issues arise if Trump announces or hints at official policy through Truth Social. Jones referenced the 2012 Stock Act, barring executive branch members, including the president, from trading on privileged information.

Jones speculated Trump’s lawyers might argue transparency due to public service announcements, countering deceit and fraud claims.

Comments from Trump Media & Technology Group

Shannon Devine, a spokeswoman for Trump Media & Technology Group, contended the early post preview doesn’t equate to insider trading. She remarked, “Truth API offers customers the fastest way to ingest publicly available Truth Social data,” dismissing critics’ trading theories as novel.

Democratic Senators’ Demands for Investigation

Democratic Senators have urged federal regulators to investigate potential securities law violations. In a letter to the SEC by Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Adam Schiff of California, the service was labeled “an outrageous abuse of the President’s office” undermining market integrity. They requested an inquiry. The SEC declined to comment.

Devine dismissed the letter’s accusations as partisan tactics, accusing politicians of harming a publicly traded company under the guise of free-market behavior.

Trump remains the largest shareholder of his media company, controlled by a trust managed by his son, Donald Trump Jr., according to filings. As customers sign up for Truth API, the Trump family’s wealth is expected to increase.

Concerns on Market Integrity

Virginia Canter, a former SEC lawyer, criticized the move, suggesting it normalizes insider trading and undermines market confidence. Canter, now with Democracy Defenders Fund, noted that regular investors suffer from disadvantageous trade positions without similar information access.

A Wall Street executive questioned whether monetizing the presidency in this manner should be allowed, doubting investment banks’ willingness to challenge it.
