Ukrainian Forces Target Russian Naval Base in Black Sea Operation

Ukrainian anti-ship missiles, along with jet-powered aerial and sea drones, launched a significant attack on a key Russian naval base on the Black Sea, as reported by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday. This nighttime operation reflects Ukraine’s strategic military advancements since Russia’s invasion over four years ago. Kyiv has developed cutting-edge drones that have repeatedly hit Russian ships, including warships and oil tankers.

The ongoing conflict involves both countries with Black Sea coastlines. Ukraine’s uncrewed fleet has effectively restricted the activities of Russia’s previously dominant Black Sea navy. This accomplishment is considered one of the notable successes of the war by Ukrainian officials.

Despite facing slow and costly progress on the battlefield, Russian President Vladimir Putin appears determined to continue the war. According to Ukrainian intelligence, Putin plans an additional mobilization of several hundred thousand Russians by the year’s end, as noted by Zelenskyy on social media.

Operation Against Novorossiysk Naval Base

The Ukrainian military executed a targeted operation against the naval base in Novorossiysk, the last significant Russian fleet stronghold on the Black Sea, according to Zelenskyy’s social media post. The attack focused on air defenses, piers, and other port infrastructure in the Krasnodar region city.

Regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported that Ukrainian drones attacked Novorossiysk, Anapa, Gelendzhik, and the Temryuk district. Moscow’s Defense Ministry announced that more than 500 Ukrainian drones were shot down by Russian air defenses.

Tragically, in Novorossiysk, an eight-year-old child lost their life, and another person died in the hospital due to injuries sustained during the attack. Additionally, 12 other individuals were wounded in the region. Debris from the downed drones affected four industrial plants and 21 residential buildings, though details of the damage were not provided.

Impact on Oil Export Hub

Novorossiysk hosts an essential international oil terminal. The Grushovaya oil transshipment complex near Novorossiysk is a major southern Russian hub for oil and petroleum products. In February, the U.S. State Department expressed concerns about Ukraine’s attacks on Novorossiysk, noting impacts on U.S. oil interests in Kazakhstan.

The Caspian Pipeline Consortium runs a pipeline from northwest Kazakhstan’s Caspian coast to Novorossiysk. This pipeline manages a significant portion of crude exports from key Kazakh fields, involving major U.S. energy firms like Chevron and ExxonMobil.

Drone Attacks in Crimea and Ukraine

In Crimea, Sevastopol’s Russian-appointed head, Mikhail Razvozhayev, reported that air defenses downed 115 Ukrainian drones overnight. The incident damaged 10 apartment buildings and 25 private homes.

Concurrently, Ukraine’s air force disclosed that Russia fired 138 long-range strike drones and several missiles across Ukraine during the night. Damage was noted at 16 locations. In Ukraine’s southern Kherson region, a Russian drone attack killed two people and injured two more. The offensive also destroyed a shopping mall in Zaporizhzhia, as confirmed by authorities.
