Velez’s Lighthearted Comments Spark Controversy

2 days ago 0

Reporter Abigail Velez, covering a U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) event in Long Beach, California, for ABC7 Los Angeles, faced backlash for her comments on the team’s next opponent. Velez made lighthearted remarks about Bosnia and Herzegovina while wrapping up coverage of the USA’s loss to Turkey.

She commented, “The next round, Team USA will play Bosnia next Wednesday. One thing about Bosnia, I could not point out where it is on a map. I don’t know much about Bosnia, but I don’t want to know because Team USA, we’re back and better than ever. Get prepared, Bosnia.”

The comments, intended as playful trash talk in anticipation of the upcoming World Cup match, led to some criticism. While many understood the intended humor, others, including the Bosnian national soccer team, didn’t appreciate the comments. The team tweeted, “My goodness, the stereotypes write themselves,” amplifying reaction with over 10 million views.

Following the outcry, Velez issued an apology, acknowledging her comments were “insensitive and inappropriate.” She expressed regret, stating, “In a poor attempt to have fun with World Cup competition, I made a thoughtless comment. I apologize to the people of Bosnia and the Bosnian Football team.”

Velez added, “The World Cup is about uniting communities worldwide, and my comment didn’t reflect that spirit. Wishing all teams the best on their World Cup journey.”

The incident reflects ongoing debates about humor and sensitivity in sports coverage. Many argued for a forgiving approach, encouraging a balance between good-natured fun and respect for all teams and nations.

Sean Joseph, a writer for OutKick, expressed concern about the increasing sensitivity to jokes and trash talk, suggesting that people are too easily offended.
