Vice President JD Vance Engages in Iran Negotiations in Switzerland

1 week ago 0

Vice President JD Vance arrived in Switzerland early Sunday to initiate a new phase of negotiations with Iran. The Trump administration seeks to establish a lasting agreement following the recent ceasefire.

Vance landed shortly before 6 a.m. local time and joined White House envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, for these discussions. Swiss authorities confirmed that the Iranian delegation had also reached Bürgenstock, the designated location for the talks.

The initial plan was to conduct the negotiations on Friday, but the Swiss foreign ministry announced a delay in the planned discussions involving the U.S., Iran, Qatar, and Pakistan.

The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah marks the first test of the new Trump Iran framework.

According to Axios, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was expected to join the talks. These negotiations follow Trump’s signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Iran after the G7 summit at the Palace of Versailles. This agreement established a 60-day ceasefire and set a framework for broader negotiations aimed at conflict resolution.

Via Truth Social, Trump cautioned that the U.S. might impose tolls in the Strait of Hormuz if a lasting agreement isn’t reached before the ceasefire’s end.

Before departing from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Vance emphasized the importance of establishing a framework for future talks. “A successful trip will involve setting up the structure of the negotiations,” he said.

He added, “We aim to have a principal level of political leadership at the top, with the technical team remaining on-site.” Vance expected to stay in Switzerland for a couple of days.

During a news conference, Vance mentioned discussions would likely cover nuclear issues and the Lebanon ceasefire. He acknowledged that Iran might have additional concerns.

While referring to conditions in Lebanon, Vance noted improvements despite ongoing skirmishes between Israel and Hezbollah. “Things are improving, even if sporadic violence remains a concern,” he stated. Vance stressed the need to prevent further escalation and maintain the ceasefire.

Pakistan announced its involvement, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir joining the technical discussions in Switzerland.
