2 weeks ago 0

During the first half of the match between Spain and Cape Verde on Monday afternoon, Cape Verde’s goalkeeper Vozinha faced off against one of the world’s top teams with determination and skill. In the 39th minute, Spain executed a precise pass down the left side, setting up a golden opportunity directly in front of the goal, with only Vozinha standing in the way.

Ferran Torres of Spain hit the ball off the crossbar, triggering a frantic scramble as the ball deflected into the air. Mikel Oyarzabal attempted a header to score on the rebound, but Vozinha quickly recovered, jumping into action again to push the ball safely out of play. The play was eventually stopped, ruling Spain offside on the initial pass, but it showcased Vozinha’s commitment. He was determined not to yield easily in this high-pressure match.

In the end, Vozinha recorded seven crucial saves, helping Cape Verde secure a 0-0 draw against Spain and earning the nation a historic point in its first-ever World Cup match. Spain, the No. 3-ranked team in FIFA’s global standings, boasts a lineup filled with players from elite European clubs, making Vozinha’s performance even more impressive.

Josimar José Évora Dias, known as Vozinha, hails from Cape Verde and was raised by his grandparents, who gave him the nickname meaning “voice.” His career has spanned clubs across Angola, Moldova, Cyprus, Slovakia, and Portugal. Despite the lack of affiliation with major teams like Real Madrid or AC Milan, Vozinha delivered a performance that suggested otherwise.

Late in the first half, Vozinha deflected a well-placed header near his goal, diving and extending his fingertips. Although age may have revealed itself through the creases on his face when the camera zoomed in, his agility in that moment belied his 40 years.

Spain dominated most statistical categories throughout the game, taking 27 shots to Cape Verde’s 6, along with a majority of corner kicks and a significant lead in ball possession. However, Cape Verde’s defenders remained compact, and Vozinha maintained his composure, even with the introduction of Spain’s Lamine Yamal in the second half.

After the historic match, Cape Verdean fans celebrated outside the stadium, waving flags and holding scarves reading “Cabo Verde” for television cameras. The match put Cape Verde on the map, highlighting their name on the international stage.
