West Hollywood Faces Aftermath of Major Water Main Break

Tadeh Ghazalian, owner of Dialog Cafe, is experiencing significant setbacks following a water main break on Sunset Boulevard. The family business, established 20 years ago, has been forced to close completely due to structural damage, the loss of food and products, and the depletion of inventory.

“The biggest problem is the sheer amount of water and sand that swept through,” Ghazalian explained. “Rebuilding operations will take some time.” A rupture in a 3-foot trunk line on Thursday morning released 17 million gallons of water into West Hollywood, stretching from the Sunset Strip past Santa Monica Boulevard. Officials are assessing the extent of damage but indicate a prolonged recovery process for those impacted.

West Hollywood Mayor John Heilman estimated that between 150 and 200 vehicles suffered damage or destruction from the flood. Officials are informing residents on how to file claims with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to seek compensation for water damages.

Several residential units experienced flooding, and electricity had to be shut off in some locations due to compromised electrical systems. Underground garages sustained the majority of the damage, necessitating the removal of excess water.

Amidst the chaos, Joe Artle, an apartment building manager on Palm Avenue and Cynthia Street, found himself at a loss, surrounded by mud and damaged vehicles. Artle, 70, was alerted by his friend, Rudy Vargas, at around 3 a.m. on Thursday. They managed to save only a small number of cars from the 20 parked in the garage. “The water was so intense,” Artle reflected, comparing the scene to whitewater rapids.

Artle, who has lived in the building for 25 years, encountered unprecedented damage. Many tenants lost vehicles and stored belongings, and the building’s laundry facilities were destroyed.

Vargas, 40, described his frantic efforts as driven by adrenaline. He recalled struggling to stay upright while navigating the flooded area, using street poles for support. “Sometimes rain floods the garage, but never this severely,” Vargas noted, emphasizing the severity of the situation.

Sunset Boulevard remains closed due to the resulting sinkhole from the rupture.
