The WNBA responded to a social media incident involving players Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese. A video, shared online, showed them discussing a $400 wager on their respective teams’ upcoming game. The WNBA described the post as missing its intent.

The original post emerged from All-Star Weekend, prior to the game between Bueckers’ Dallas Wings and Reese’s Atlanta Dream. The clip included playful banter about a bet, accompanied by the caption, “We did?” followed by a laughing emoji and further mention of their wager on the night’s game.

After recognizing the misstep, the league swiftly removed the video. “The post was meant to be humorous,” stated a league spokesperson. “However, WNBA players understand the strict policies against betting on league games and receive annual training to reinforce these rules.”

The league plans to address the incident with the players. Discussions about wagering on WNBA games, even in jest, can lead to misunderstandings and issues.

The Wings and Dream deferred comments to the league’s statement. According to the collective bargaining agreement, any wagering is strictly forbidden. Penalties for such actions may range from fines to suspensions, or even disqualification, as decided by the commissioner.

In the game, the Dream overcame a 15-point deficit to defeat the Wings 82-81. Reese contributed 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Bueckers tallied 16 points and six assists.
