Judge Overturns $100,000 H-1B Visa Fee

A federal judge has nullified the Trump administration’s $100,000 fee on new H-1B visas. This decision contradicts a previous court ruling that upheld the fee increase. The administration initially introduced the fee to limit foreign workers from competing with American job seekers.

Judge Leo Sorokin in Boston ruled in favor of 20 states opposing the fee. He determined that the executive branch overstepped its authority and violated the Administrative Procedure Act. His ruling stated that imposing such a fee resembled a tax, which requires congressional approval.

H-1B visas cater to high-skilled jobs for which finding qualified American workers is challenging. Technology companies frequently use this visa, with many approvals granted to Indian workers. States have argued that filling vacancies in critical sectors like healthcare and education is tough, and the elevated fees exacerbated these challenges.

Expedited Visa Services Introduced

The State Department has announced a new pilot program offering expedited visa services for business and tourist applications. The service costs $750 on top of the existing $185 fee. Applicants can schedule interview appointments within ten days of payment at selected U.S. embassies and consulates.

This program runs from July 1 to December 31. It aims to alleviate delays resulting from previous administration policies that made U.S. entry more stringent. Measures taken included bonds of up to $15,000 in some cases and extensive personal history checks during visa processing.

Potential Expiration of Surveillance Program

Republican senators are warning that a critical surveillance program may soon lapse. Bipartisan disagreement over President Trump’s intelligence community appointment has created hurdles in extending the program.

Senators Tom Cotton and Chuck Grassley addressed Secretary of State Marco Rubio concerning the impending expiration of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. This section enables the collection of foreign communications without a warrant.

Rubio expressed his disappointment in the political impasse, emphasizing the importance of the program for national security. The lapse could affect intelligence collection significantly.

Public Reaction to Trump at NBA Finals

During Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, President Trump faced mixed reactions. Attendees initially chanted during the national anthem but booed loudly when Trump appeared on screens. The atmosphere shifted to cheers when the U.S. flag and New York Knicks players were shown.

Unmoved, Trump reported hearing enthusiastic cheers from fans. He attended the game with various officials and spent time speaking with notable figures, including NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
