Italy’s foreign minister has called off a scheduled visit to the United States. This decision comes in response to remarks made by President Donald Trump about Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
During an interview with Italy’s La7 broadcaster, Trump claimed that Meloni, known for her ideological alignment with Trump in Europe, was eager to take a photo with him. He stated, “She wanted a picture with me so badly.” Trump added, “I wouldn’t have taken it, but I felt sorry for her.”
Antonio Tajani, the foreign minister of Italy, expressed that Trump’s comments were “serious and offensive” and were an affront to “all of Italy.” Tajani had been scheduled to visit the United States on Sunday and Monday.
Prime Minister Meloni quickly reacted on social media, expressing that she was “stunned” by Trump’s narrative. She asserted that Trump’s account was false, stating, “Neither I nor Italy ever beg.”
This development remains part of an evolving story, and further updates are anticipated.
