Diplomatic Tensions: Charles Kushner and U.S. Relations with France

1 week ago 0

Charles Kushner, the U.S. ambassador to France under President Trump, has stirred diplomatic waters in Paris. His approach aligns with Trump’s combative style, particularly evident in his accusations against the French establishment for antisemitism.

Recently, Mr. Kushner visited a military cemetery in eastern France. There, he recited the Kaddish prayer over the graves of five Jewish American soldiers who died in World War I. This act was personal for him as an Orthodox Jew. However, his broader diplomatic efforts have drawn criticism, primarily due to his vocal stance on antisemitism in France.

Soon after taking his post last July, Mr. Kushner accused the French government of insufficient actions against antisemitism. He claims the situation has since deteriorated. In a recent interview, he suggested that the U.S. administration should offer refugee status to French Jews. This proposal comes even as the administration tightens asylum policies.

Mr. Kushner emphasized the fear felt by the Jewish community in France, suggesting they need more options beyond moving to Israel. These statements, initially made in an open letter to French President Emmanuel Macron, have strained relations with the French Foreign Ministry.

The situation escalated when Mr. Kushner ignored two summonses for rebuke by the French Foreign Ministry. This led the French foreign minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, to threaten to ban Kushner from meeting with French officials.

Kushner’s actions and comments continue to impact U.S.-France diplomatic relations, reflecting a complex dynamic in international diplomacy under the Trump administration.
