Sen. John Fetterman, representing Pennsylvania, criticized the Democratic Party regarding New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani‘s refusal to acknowledge the Supreme Court’s decision. Fetterman voiced concerns that ignoring court rulings represents a constitutional threat, suggesting a double standard within the party.
Fetterman emphasized the importance of respecting court decisions to maintain democratic integrity. He noted the lack of outrage among Democrats about Mamdani’s decision to oppose the ruling.
“I haven’t seen the reaction from my party members now that the mayor of New York is saying he will defy the Supreme Court ruling,” Fetterman remarked during his appearance on “Saturday in America.”
Mamdani’s stance came after the Supreme Court reinforced former President Donald Trump’s authority to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian and Syrian migrants. Fetterman referenced past Democratic claims of a “constitutional crisis” under Trump, while clarifying Trump’s administration hadn’t defied court rulings then.
Recent decisions by the Supreme Court supported Trump’s immigration agenda, aiming to reduce asylum claims. In Mullin v. Al Otro Lado, the court determined that migrants stopped at the border can’t apply for asylum. In Mullin v. Doe, it ruled that Haitians and Syrians with TPS couldn’t obtain judicial relief to delay the revocation of their status.
Mamdani openly stated he would not accept the latter ruling. Fetterman has consistently warned against the growing influence of far-left politicians like Mamdani within the Democratic Party.
Further conversations about the party’s shift have emerged with figures like Graham Planter, Nithya Raman, and Janeese Lewis George leading more progressive agendas.
