Hospitals Battle Rising Temperatures Amid Heat Waves

The Paris-Saclay Hospital faced a critical challenge during a recent heat wave. Emergency medics urgently needed ice to bring down patients’ high temperatures. Without an ice machine, the hospital turned to a fast-food restaurant and local supermarkets for supplies. Now, they have ordered an ice maker, readying themselves for future heat waves as climate change brings more frequent high temperatures.

The recent heat wave severely tested hospitals. The hospital director, Cédric Lussiez, described the situation as “horrible” and emphasized the need for new solutions. Efforts to tackle heat-related issues are increasing, with the French government investing 100 million euros in cooling systems for hospitals. Additionally, they plan to supply 30,000 air-conditioning units to health facilities soon.

The World Health Organization warned that Europe warms at more than twice the global average, making heat waves a regular occurrence. They stressed the importance of preparation to save lives. At Paris-Saclay Hospital, emergency cases surged, with patients suffering from dehydration, heart attacks, and other heat-related problems. Dr. Nicolas Gonzales likened the influx to climbing a “big mountain” over seven intense days.

The first emergency case involved a 50-year-old man in a coma due to high body temperature. His collapse happened suddenly, signaling the severe impact of heat. Other patients included children and elderly individuals facing similar issues. Heat acts as a physical assault on the body, which can lead to heart failure when not mitigated.

Older hospitals struggled without sufficient air conditioning, resorting to electric fans and ice blocks to keep medicines from spoiling. Student nurses assisted in keeping patients hydrated. In a psychiatric unit, temperatures soared, causing concern. The hospital is now creating cool rooms and planning renovations to better protect patients.
