The operator of a boat that capsized in New York Harbor, resulting in the deaths of a mother and her infant daughter, is facing criminal charges. Authorities are investigating if the vessel was operating as an illegal charter, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The 22-foot Bayliner speedboat overturned at approximately 10:25 p.m. on Saturday near Liberty Island. This area is known for housing the iconic Statue of Liberty. Prior to police arrival, twelve individuals were rescued from the water. Police divers later discovered the 27-year-old woman and her 5-month-old daughter, and both were transported to a hospital where they were pronounced dead. The remaining survivors are reportedly in stable condition, according to Coast Guard reports.
Captain Doreen McCarthy, Commander of Coast Guard Sector New York, expressed deep sorrow over the loss. She conveyed condolences to the victims’ family and praised the quick response of partner agencies and a Good Samaritan vessel that assisted in rescuing survivors.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life last night, and our thoughts are with the victims’ family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” said Captain Doreen McCarthy.
Manuel Hernandez, a 46-year-old resident of New York, faces 13 counts of reckless endangerment. On Sunday, authorities were unable to locate a contact number for him, and online court records have yet to reflect the charges.
Notifications to the victims’ families are pending, and their identities have not been disclosed.
Coast Guard investigators are collaborating with police to thoroughly examine the incident. Illegal charters, defined as any passenger-for-hire vessel lacking Coast Guard credentials, safety equipment, and inspection certificates, are a focus of the investigation. The authorities are determined to hold violators accountable.
