As municipal elections draw near, Berlin faces a significant debate over traffic congestion in its center. This clash is notably between conservatives and progressives, each proposing their own solutions to the problem.

A long-standing stereotype portrays Germans as car enthusiasts. However, in Berlin, traffic congestion is increasingly troublesome, stirring up debates, particularly in an election year.
Until recently, Berliners focused on concerns like deteriorating infrastructure, slow bureaucracy, and limited public housing. Now, the rights of car owners have entered the spotlight. Conservatives argue that traffic restrictions infringe on personal freedom, while progressives emphasize the importance of environmental protection and enhanced life quality.
Berlin boasts numerous eco-friendly initiatives, including bike lanes, car-sharing services, and extensive public transportation. These measures have been popular, but certain green-minded residents are pushing further. Recently, tens of thousands signed a petition aiming to restrict private car access to the congested city center, limiting visits to 12 per year per person.
“Fewer cars, More Berlin,” declares a slogan found on posters around the city. The petition’s opponents are equally frustrated by congestion but propose an entirely different approach: they suggest reducing bike lanes and other green measures, claiming these exacerbate traffic problems.
The Christian Democratic Union, leading the conservative opposition, has responded with campaign posters reading, “Ban the banning of cars.” This center-right party strongly opposes restrictions that limit car use.
