Deadly Fire Claims Lives at Delhi Hotel, Sparks Investigation

At least 21 people lost their lives in a fire that engulfed a hotel in New Delhi on a Wednesday morning. The tragic incident occurred at the Flourish Inn Stay hotel located in the Malviya Nagar area of southern Delhi. The blaze began around 8:50 a.m. local time in the restaurant on the ground floor and rapidly spread to the upper floors, where guests were asleep in their rooms.

Videos captured the frantic scene as some individuals jumped from the upper stories to escape the deadly flames and smoke. A local resident, Vasim Raja, was among the first at the scene. He told CBS News, “I saw at least two people jumping out from the windows.” Before rescue teams arrived, Raja and others managed to rescue seven people from the building’s basement.

Rescue teams worked tirelessly to conduct recovery operations following the fire at the Flourish Inn Stay hotel in New Delhi.

The authorities reported that 47 people were in the hotel during the fire, with 21 confirmed dead. Among the deceased were 17 foreign nationals from Africa and Central Asia. This hotel frequently accommodated visitors seeking treatment at the nearby Max Hospital Saket, a significant healthcare center only 50 yards away. The hospital received 18 deceased victims and treated 15 individuals in the ICU for various injuries.

New Delhi is a hub for medical tourism due to its high-quality and affordable healthcare. This reputation draws patients from Africa, Central Asia, the Persian Gulf, and other regions. The Delhi Police registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against unidentified individuals, initiating a thorough investigation into the fire’s cause.

Preliminary assessments by the fire department indicated the hotel lacked a valid fire safety certificate. Although the cause of the blaze remains officially unknown, some reports suggest an electrical short circuit might have ignited the fire. The government ordered an investigation to learn more about how it started.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to the tragedy by promising relief payments. Families of the deceased will receive 200,000 Indian rupees (approximately $2,020), while those injured will get 50,000 rupees (around $520). Delhi’s Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, expressed deep sadness over the incident and offered condolences to all affected families, describing it as a “heartbreaking tragedy.”
