Anne Hathaway recently shared her experience with a secret medical condition she battled for a decade. During her appearance on The New York Times’ podcast ‘Popcast,’ the 43-year-old actress discussed being legally blind in her left eye throughout her 30s due to a cataract.
“This is maybe too much information,” Hathaway confessed. “I was half blind for 10 years.”
The condition significantly affected her vision, leading to surgery. “It impacted my vision so much that I was basically legally blind out of my left eye,” she explained. “I didn’t realize how bad it had gotten until I could finally see the full spectrum.”
Hathaway’s condition was taxing her nervous system without her knowing. Following surgery at the age of 40, she described her vision as a “miracle.”
The Mayo Clinic defines a cataract as a clouding of the eye’s lens, often making vision resemble looking through frosted or fogged-up glass. This can hinder reading, driving, and recognizing faces.
Reflecting on her improved sight, Hathaway shares immense gratitude. “I appreciate vision because I literally feel like every day, I wake up and I get to see the way that I do, it’s a miracle,” she said. “Two generations back, that wouldn’t have been an option.”
Recently, Hathaway addressed plastic surgery rumors. Despite preferring not to draw attention to herself, she felt compelled to respond to the circulating speculations.
“We’re at a time when people feel very confident in assuming what they think is fact,” Hathaway noted. “The speculation has gotten so loud that you do feel the need to just get your truth out there.”
The actress emphasized that such assumptions involved significant decisions people wrongly presumed. “I wanted to show that like, no, I didn’t make a huge medical decision. It’s just two braids,” she clarified, adding a note of humor about possibly opting for a facelift in the future.
