A group of billionaires potentially impacted by a proposed wealth tax in California is making significant efforts to oppose the plan. Led by Google co-founder Sergey Brin and other influential tech investors, the coalition has secured nearly $87 million for advertisements across the state, marking a major move to challenge the tax.
The advertisements will begin airing next month, marking the start of what is predicted to be a costly campaign that has already intensified tensions within Silicon Valley and state politics. Proposition 40, a measure set for the November ballot, proposes a one-time tax on California residents with a net worth of at least $1 billion. The mere possibility of this tax has already prompted some of the wealthiest Californians to leave the state or invest heavily in local political campaigns.
Instead of directly opposing Proposition 40, the billionaire-backed group known as Building A Better California has introduced two alternative tax-related propositions. These initiatives contain elements that could potentially nullify the billionaire tax if either is passed by voters.
The advertising plans released by Building A Better California do not clarify which specific measures the commercials will address. However, Abby Lunardini, a spokesperson for the group, emphasized their dedication to informing California voters about policies affecting the state’s future and economy. According to Lunardini, the measures they support aim to offer essential protections to enhance state accountability and governance while shielding California families from new taxes on their retirement and savings.
