Christa Pike has been discharged from the hospital and returned to prison after surviving a failed execution attempt. Her legal team provided this information via a statement.
Pike’s lawyers, Stephen Ferrell, Luke Ihnen from Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee, and Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason from the Tennessee Office of the Post Conviction Defender, communicated that she was released from a local hospital and is now back at Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center. She has been housed there for over 30 years.
The statement expressed her gratitude to first responders and the medical personnel for their care amid these extraordinary events. Her legal team noted, “She is continuing to receive medical care at the prison, and we will continue to track her recovery.”
Pike, aged 50, ended up in the hospital after surviving two doses of the lethal drug pentobarbital on September 30. The state attempted her execution for the murder of classmate Colleen Slemmer, a crime she committed in 1995. Her lawyers described her physical recovery as “remarkable” but raised concerns about the potential long-term effects and her legal situation.
The botched execution has renewed debate over state practices regarding the death penalty, especially with lethal injection.
