Two police officers in Philadelphia are hospitalized following a shooting incident on Saturday morning in the western part of the city. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel reported the details during a news conference.
Details of the Incident
The first officer, aged 40 and a parent of two, suffered three gunshot wounds. The second officer, aged 33 and a parent of five, was hit 12 times. Both officers were responding to a call regarding a man with a weapon on a porch when they were attacked. The address of the incident was 140 North 52nd Street, and it was reported shortly after midnight.
Response and Aftermath
Upon their arrival at the scene, the officers encountered heavy gunfire. Commissioner Bethel explained that additional officers and a SWAT team reached the location within about 30 minutes of the initial call. They found the officers wounded on the porch.
A violent exchange occurred when the suspect fired at responding officers. The SWAT team eventually found the suspect hiding in a tree and took him into custody. He was found in possession of two handguns and a shotgun. One of the handguns belonged to one of the wounded officers.
Current Situation and Appeal for Support
The injured officers were transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for surgery. Their current medical conditions remain undisclosed. Commissioner Bethel emphasized the dedication and bravery of the department’s personnel, urging public support and prayers for the officers’ recovery.
“We are praying now that our officers make it through this terrible situation,” Bethel said.
The suspect allegedly ambushed the officers by shooting at them from an alley. The investigation continues as authorities analyze the situation.
