Colorado Democrats Censure Governor After Commuting Sentence

Polis Criticized for Clemency Decision

Colorado Democrats have issued a formal reprimand to Governor Jared Polis after he reduced the prison sentence of Tina Peters. Peters, the former Mesa County Clerk, was involved in a voting system breach and became known for her stance against the 2020 election results.

Party Response to Clemency

The Colorado Democratic Party State Central Committee voted to censure the governor, expressing their displeasure with the commutation. The party argued that the move sets a harmful precedent, suggesting collusion with former President Donald Trump, who supported the sentence reduction.

Reducing her sentence now, under pressure from Donald Trump, is not justice.

With the clemency, Peters’ sentence was amended and paved the way for her parole eligibility starting June 2026. The Democratic Party accused Polis of damaging its credibility and decided to bar him from future party-sponsored events, stating the decision diverges from their values.

Governor’s Response

Polis defended his decision, emphasizing commitment to justice and dialogue. A spokesperson for the governor indicated that truth is not always popular and stressed the importance of open debate over censorship.

Details of Clemency and Public Reaction

The governor’s recent action included 44 clemency decisions, comprising 35 pardons and nine commutations. Following the announcement, President Trump expressed his approval on social media, urging for Peters’ release with the sentiment “FREE TINA!”

The executive order reduced Peters’ sentence noticeably but maintained her conviction status. Peters was found guilty in 2024 of multiple charges, including conspiracy, misconduct, and failure to comply with state requirements. Despite the clemency, the underlying conviction remains unchanged.

Opposition to Clemency

Democratic officials, including Secretary of State Jena Griswold, disapproved of the commutation, critiquing it as a validation of the election denial movement.

Attorneys for Peters are currently appealing her sentence, seeking recognition of a pardon from Trump. Colorado officials contest this claim, emphasizing its state jurisdiction.
