Many influential conservatives express concern that artificial intelligence (AI) is being used to push left-leaning media narratives, making it challenging for average Americans to trust AI as a news source. Critics argue AI systems often generate convincing yet false information, eroding public trust. Right-leaning Media Research Center (MRC) studies found chatbots like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude may present information with a liberal bias.
MRC President David Bozell stated, “We’re watching the next phase of media bias unfold.” He believes AI tools from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic may no longer be neutral. These concerns arise as AI use increases, despite its potential to enhance information access.
“Silicon Valley’s shiny new toys can no longer be considered neutral and cannot be trusted.” – Media Research Center President David Bozell
ChatGPT faced scrutiny after declining to validate claims about Charlie Kirk’s assassination, which MRC argues showcases AI’s political influences. In another instance, the AI chatbot Claude reportedly rejected the idea of AI incorporating the First Amendment explicitly.
Recent controversies involving Democratic Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner further highlight concerns about AI bias. Platner’s controversial Reddit history was seemingly downplayed by major chatbots. When asked about Platner, Gemini highlighted positive developments in his campaign while downplaying his vulgar posts. ChatGPT noted the old Reddit posts but focused on their use in Republican attack ads.
Dan Schneider, MRC’s Free Speech America vice president, cited international research indicating today’s AI systems largely rely on left-wing media sources. He asserts AI should remain a neutral tool, not serve any political agenda. Further concerns arise as leaders within AI companies reportedly have close connections to the Democratic Party. In contrast, Elon Musk, the founder of chatbot Grok, is more aligned with conservative views.
Critics, including a University of Cambridge PhD student, have experienced perceived bias firsthand. Malia Marks describes how ChatGPT suggested that submitting her politically motivated piece to conservative outlets like The New York Post could harm her career. The chatbot advised reworking the piece for left-leaning publications.
OpenAI and Anthropic were contacted by Fox News Digital for comments but did not provide immediate feedback. Google stated that “Gemini is designed to offer neutral responses,” yet the debate over AI’s political impartiality continues as technology’s influence on media grows.
