Double Stabbing Suspect Charged with Hate Crime on NYC’s Upper West Side

A suspect in a double stabbing incident on New York City’s Upper West Side faces charges of attempted murder as a hate crime. The attacks have brought attention to safety concerns shared by the affected communities.

Suspect Charged in Stabbing Incident

Authorities have charged Raul Morales, 51, with attempted murder as a hate crime, assault as a hate crime, and criminal possession of a weapon. These charges stem from the stabbing of Moshe Grunhaus, a 50-year-old Jewish man. In a separate attack on a 57-year-old Asian man, Morales faces charges of attempted murder and assault, without the hate crime designation in this case.

Both victims are expected to recover from their injuries. The suspect allegedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the attacks, according to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Officers executed a search warrant at Morales’ nearby residence, recovering items including a laptop, the Quran, and a book about Che Guevara. It’s unknown if these belong to Morales. He reportedly shared the apartment with others.

Community Reactions and Concerns

Community members, including Rabbi Yosie Levine of the Jewish Center, express dismay over the violence. Levine, who knows Grunhaus, reassured that Grunhaus was in good spirits when visited at the hospital.

“I was happy to see him. He was surrounded by good friends and family,” Levine shared.

Levine noted the unprecedented nature of the attack, emphasizing its impact on the community. The rabbi conveyed the urgent need for safety improvements.

Grunhaus, recently relocated to Florida, was visiting New York to finalize personal matters when attacked.

The incident underscores ongoing concerns about community safety and the prevalence of hate crimes. Authorities continue to investigate Morales’ background, especially potential mental health issues, despite no known history with the NYPD.
