Body camera footage captured a dramatic rescue in Beeville, Texas. On Saturday, heavy storms led to a vehicle becoming stranded in floodwaters, with a baby trapped inside. The incident took place about 100 miles southeast of San Antonio.
The region experienced heavy rainfall, quickly turning roads into dangerous waterways. The police reported that a sudden downpour overwhelmed a low-water crossing, which caught the vehicle as it entered.
Officers and firefighters responded when a vehicle drove into a flooded creek crossing. The vehicle was pushed by the rushing water, according to a Facebook post by the Beeville Police Department.
The vehicle, a white sedan, was swept toward a creek. The situation deteriorated rapidly, leaving no time for barricades before the vehicle arrived. A fire chief at the scene tried to flag down the driver, but the alert came too late.
Footage shows the sedan becoming stranded with water levels rising to the wheels. An officer reported that the car was being pushed by the floodwaters.
Amidst the chaos, the driver screamed to nearby officers about the baby inside the vehicle. An officer ran through the floodwaters, opened the car door, and rescued the infant in a carriage. Another responder shielded the child from the rain using a jacket.
The police confirmed that everyone, including the driver, was unharmed. The department used the footage as a warning about flood dangers, emphasizing the speed at which conditions can change.
What may seem passable one minute can quickly become dangerous the next. It takes little water to push a vehicle off the road. By the time you realize the danger, it may be too late.
Police urged drivers to heed barricades and avoid flooded areas. It is not only risky but also illegal to bypass these warnings.
No errand or destination is worth risking your safety, the police advised.
