Emergency Shelters Open Amid Garden Grove Chemical Crisis

New emergency shelters have been established to aid residents evacuated due to a hazardous materials incident in Garden Grove. The Orange County Fire Authority announced Friday night that Kennedy High in La Palma was added to the list of shelters alongside Ocean View High in Huntington Beach, Savanna High in Anaheim, and Freedom Hall in Fountain Valley.

By Saturday, several cars had arrived at Kennedy High’s parking lot, with the American Red Cross managing the evacuation center in the gymnasium. Support came from various groups, including police officers and workers, to assist the shelter’s operation.

The firefighters stabilized the temperature inside the compromised tank at GKN Aerospace to around 90 degrees Celsius. However, two potential outcomes remain: a massive explosion or a rupture spilling toxic methyl methacrylate. The tank’s failure, triggered by a faulty cooling system, led to widespread evacuations and school closures.
