Fitness influencer Mark Langowski, known as @bodybymark on social media, organized a pushup and plank competition in New York City recently. The event aimed to encourage people to get active. Langowski, who has nearly two million followers on Instagram, invited fitness enthusiasts to share their workout routines. The meet-up in Washington Square Park was in collaboration with Oikos yogurt and took place on May 12.
The competition crowned two winners, a male and a female, who excelled in either the pushup or plank event. Each winner received a $500 prize. The main goal, as shared by Langowski in an interview with Fox News Digital, was to inspire people to move more.
“It’s a way to encourage strength and overall fitness in New York City and all around the country,” Langowski stated.
Highlighting the community spirit, Langowski shared, “We got together and we’re doing a plank competition, pushup competition. We had a guy just do 111 pushups. We’re just getting people moving.”
According to Langowski, qualities such as strength, humility, and confidence are key for a good competitor. He noted that those who did the most often didn’t boast about their abilities.
For Langowski, pushups and planks serve as an excellent baseline for measuring fitness. He also mentioned the importance of exercises like pull-ups, squats, and running for a well-rounded fitness regimen.
Langowski offered advice for those looking to improve their fitness but who might feel overwhelmed: start small. He suggested beginning with modified pushups, such as doing them on your knees or against a wall, before progressing to standard pushups.
“You’ll be surprised after you do that for a couple weeks, a couple months, a couple years – you’re going to be able to do a lot,” he encouraged.
The trainer emphasized the importance of rest, a balanced diet, and adequate protein intake for muscle growth. However, he noted that the first step is simply finding the motivation to start.
“You’ve just got to get out there,” Langowski advised.
He recommended starting with simple activities like walking around the block. Langowski pointed out that you don’t need a pricey gym membership to improve your fitness; exercises like squats, lunges, and pushups can be done at home.
Encouraging support and safety, he added, “I would encourage people just to start, but also to get some friends or get a trainer, someone to support you.”
