1 day ago 0

The U.S. men’s national soccer team secured a 2-0 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup. This match became the most-watched English-language soccer broadcast in U.S. television history. Fox Sports reported that the broadcast attracted a peak audience of approximately 31.8 million viewers with an average viewership of 24.4 million. Furthermore, an additional 9.1 million viewers watched on Telemundo in Spanish. The game ranked as one of the most-viewed sports events in the past year.

World Cup Viewership Rivals Major Sporting Events

The recent match surpassed the previous English-language viewership record held by the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup final between the U.S. and Japan, which drew 22.3 million viewers, according to Fox Sports. Earlier USMNT matches in the group stage against Paraguay, Turkey, and Australia saw average audiences of around 18 million, 17 million, and 16 million, respectively, as per Nielsen data.

These record-breaking figures are on par with other significant sports events aired in the U.S. over the last year. For instance, the NBA Finals, where the New York Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs, averaged 24.5 million viewers on ABC and ESPN, marking the highest number since 1998. The concluding game of the Major League Baseball’s 2025 World Series saw an average of 27.3 million viewers. The NFL’s Sunday Night Football averaged 23.5 million viewers on NBC. Despite these impressive numbers, they remain overshadowed by the Super Bowl, the most-watched sports event nationwide, which attracted 125.6 million average viewers this year, according to Nielsen.

Rising Interest in World Cup Among U.S. Audience

The approaching 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, promises American fans increased accessibility with domestic venues, favorable time slots, and extensive coverage. This broader access seems to be drawing in more U.S. viewers than previous tournaments, suggesting that the World Cup is engaging not only traditional soccer fans but also attracting wider television audiences. For instance, the 2022 World Cup final between Argentina and France pulled in 25.8 million viewers across Fox and Telemundo.

In that tournament, the USMNT’s most-watched match was against England in the group stage, garnering 19.9 million viewers on Fox and Telemundo. Their round-of-16 loss to the Netherlands attracted 16.5 million viewers. With the U.S. team advancing to the last 16 in this World Cup, anticipation builds as they prepare to face Belgium on Monday, a match expected to capture a significant audience once more.
