Mayor in Mexico Killed Amid Rising Violence

A mayor in central Mexico, Valentin Lavin, was shot dead in a town hall in Temoac, Morelos, on Wednesday. This incident comes after Lavin had previously survived another assassination attempt. The town is situated near Mexico City, an area known for the presence of multiple drug cartels.

Local media reported that Lavin was aligned with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s leftist party. After a prior attack in January, Lavin’s death marks a continuing pattern of violence against local officials in Mexico. The state prosecutor’s office confirmed they found Lavin’s body within the government building and initiated efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.

A statement from officials indicated operations are underway to bring those responsible to justice.

Since 2006, nearly 100 mayors have been killed in Mexico as drug-related violence intensified. Since the current administration began in October 2024, 14 mayors have lost their lives, with three occurring in 2026 alone, according to Uno TV.

Last November, the fatal shooting of Mayor Carlos Manzo during the Day of the Dead festivities in Michoacan particularly shocked the nation. Violence against public figures is not uncommon as criminal gangs frequently target officials in regions fraught with cartel conflicts.

In a recent incident last week, assailants killed the husband of a councilwoman in Mexico. The attack also injured the politician and her daughter while they were reportedly en route to a school graduation.

President Sheinbaum stated on July 14 that homicides in Mexico have decreased by almost half since September 2024, attributing this decline to her security strategies since assuming office.

Since 2006, Mexico has experienced increased violence following the government’s crackdown on drug cartels. Government data reveals nearly 500,000 deaths and about 130,000 disappearances during this period.
