Melat Kiros, a new figure in politics and a democratic socialist, has won the Democratic primary for the U.S. House in Colorado’s 1st Congressional District. This district, primarily covering the Denver area, is a stronghold for the Democratic Party. The Associated Press declared Kiros the victor after a tough race against longtime incumbent Diana DeGette.
Diana DeGette, who first assumed office in 1997, was defeated after serving 15 terms. Her loss signals a shift within the Democratic Party, which is facing internal pressures to transition leadership to younger, more progressive candidates. Kiros embodies these ideals, having a platform focused on economic populism. Her policy proposals include universal healthcare and childcare, as well as controversial topics such as abolishing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency and halting U.S. military support to Israel.
Kiros, 29, is an Ethiopian immigrant and a Ph.D. student who has also practiced law. A significant aspect of her campaign was her commitment to refusing funding from corporate PACs and pro-Israel lobbying groups. She criticized DeGette for accepting donations from sectors such as defense, energy, and pharmaceuticals. Despite her opponent’s emphasis on progressive achievements in healthcare and climate action, Kiros’ message resonated with voters.
This primary win for Kiros follows recent successes by other Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) candidates. Notable victories include Darializa Avila Chevalier’s defeat of Adriano Espaillat in New York and Claire Valdez’s success in a race previously held by Nydia Velázquez. In Pennsylvania, Chris Rabb also secured a seat in the state’s 3rd Congressional District primary.
Kiros’ potential election in November would expand the presence of democratic socialists in Congress. Currently, Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib identify as democratic socialists along with the recent addition of Maxwell Frost from Florida. Kiros voiced in a February interview with NPR that younger generations are eager for action-oriented leadership. She stated, “Young people understand that we are in the fight of our lives. We need to have leaders that are going to be fighting for the kind of bold policies that actually get something done, and they’re refusing to settle or wait for our turn or ask for permission.”
