Mandy Patinkin Chooses Human Composting for End-of-Life Plans

2 weeks ago 0

Mandy Patinkin, the 73-year-old actor known for his role in Criminal Minds, has expressed his end-of-life preference for human composting. This decision stems from his discomfort with traditional burial methods and his Jewish heritage.

On his podcast, Don’t Listen to Us, Patinkin shared his aversion to being enclosed in a coffin. He is extremely claustrophobic and finds the concept unsettling. He mentioned a monologue from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead that depicts the feeling of entrapment in a box. Patinkin stated, “The idea of being put in a box when everything I’m familiar with has changed is absolutely unacceptable to me.”

Due to his Jewish heritage, the idea of cremation also feels wrong. He explained that the association with ovens in Auschwitz during the Holocaust is deeply ingrained in his family’s history. As a “conservative Chicago Jew,” Patinkin noted that Orthodox Judaism requires maintaining bodily completeness for the afterlife, known as Olam Haba. This belief opposes any alteration to the body, including autopsies.

Patinkin joked about needing completeness in the afterlife, imagining himself searching for missing parts like a character from The Wizard of Oz. He conveyed relief at finding an alternative that respects his beliefs. Human composting, he stated, avoids incineration and confinement, transforming his body into soil while preserving tradition.

Robyn, a guest on Patinkin’s podcast, introduced him to the concept. Her husband’s preference for an earth-friendly burial aligned with Patinkin’s desires. Human composting places the body in a vessel and covers it with organic materials. Within about a month, controlled conditions transform the body into soil, which is given back to the family.

The actor expressed enthusiasm about this method, feeling it allows him to journey to the Olam Haba intact. He celebrates the organic process converting him into useful matter, avoiding traditional methods he finds distressing.
