Iran Issues Demands for Strait of Hormuz Reopening

Iran announced that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the United States modifies its behavior. The Supreme National Security Council of Iran, akin to a politburo, issued demands that could impact negotiations over managing the waterway. The council’s secretary, Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, stressed that the U.S. must stop threats and completely cease conflict with Iran and its allies. Moreover, the U.S. should lift the naval blockade of Iranian ports, withdraw military forces, compensate Iran for war damages, lift sanctions, and release frozen assets.

No immediate response came from the U.S., which aims for a satisfactory deal regarding the strait before removing the blockade. Current talks, part of an interim deal from June, include discussions on lifting sanctions and negotiating compensation and frozen assets. The negotiation period is set to end soon but might be extended. Iran also mentioned potential agreements with Oman about managing strait navigation, though these are linked to broader conditions.

Oman, a mediator in the talks, described ongoing discussions as positive and condemned recent ship attacks in the strait. Crucial for global oil and gas supply, the strait’s status as an international waterway remains tense, with ship transits still low.

Iran Allegedly Strikes UAE Vessel

The United Arab Emirates reported an incident involving an ADNOC-owned vessel targeted by an Iranian missile in the Strait of Hormuz. The Emirati Foreign Ministry stated the attack was part of broader assaults on commercial shipping. ADNOC confirmed no casualties but noted that multiple vessels have faced similar threats since hostilities began earlier this year, resulting in injuries and at least one fatality.

While ADNOC did not provide details on the attack’s location, the UK Maritime Trade Operations Center reported a similar incident in the area, suggesting a projectile caused a fire that was quickly contained.

Yemen’s Military Action Against Houthi Rebels

Yemen’s military forces launched attacks against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in response to recent strikes by the Houthis in central and eastern regions. Col. Majed al-Nazili, Yemen’s military spokesman, indicated these actions targeted the rebels’ sites and capabilities but did not provide further details.

This escalation endangers the fragile truce between the Houthis and Yemen’s internationally recognized government, supported by a Saudi-led coalition. The developments raise concerns about reigniting the civil war that saw a temporary ceasefire in 2022.

Turkey’s Progress with Kurdish Peace Initiative

In Turkey, a draft law promoting a peace initiative with Kurdish insurgents passed its initial parliamentary hurdle. The legislation, expected to be approved soon by the general assembly, outlines processes for disarmament and rehabilitation of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) members.

Last year, the PKK agreed to disarm and disband, aligning with efforts to end the long-standing conflict with Turkey. The implementation of these measures awaits confirmation from Turkey’s National Security Council regarding the group’s disbandment and weapon surrender.

The conflict, active since the 1980s, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths. Turkey and several Western nations label the PKK as a terrorist group.
