Five individuals were discovered fatally shot late Friday at a residence in South Georgia, leading to an active police investigation. Officers arrived at a dwelling on Robin Lane in the Touchton Woods neighborhood around 11:09 p.m. There, they found five people with gunshot wounds, according to a social media post by the Douglas Police Department (DPD).
Local news outlet Douglas Now reported that investigators are considering the incident as a possible murder-suicide. By Saturday morning, police had not made any public identifications of the victims nor released suspect information. The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office referred to the event as a ‘terrible tragedy’ in a statement directed to FOX 5 Atlanta.
‘Our hearts are with the families and friends who lost somebody they love last night,’ read the statement. ‘Please pray for them and for all of our first responders who were there last night. This was a difficult scene for everybody involved.’
Douglas, situated in Coffee County in southern Georgia, is approximately 115 miles northwest of Jacksonville, Florida. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated its population to be about 11,864 as of July 2025. Newsweek reached out via email to the DPD and the Coffee County Sheriff’s office on Saturday for further information.
Increase in Mass Shootings
The incident follows a series of recent shootings in Georgia and a mass shooting Friday night in Erie, Pennsylvania, killing nine individuals, including two children. The Gun Violence Archive (GVA) defines a mass shooting as an episode where at least four people are shot, injured or killed, excluding the shooter.
The Coffee County event marked the third consecutive weekend that Georgia authorities reported a mass shooting or incident of multi-victim gun violence. A shooting during a homecoming celebration in Vienna, Georgia, approximately 80 miles northwest of Douglas, resulted in two fatalities and another 35 injuries last weekend. The violence erupted at around 1:25 a.m. at a neighborhood party covering four blocks.
Another shooting at an 18th birthday party in Macon’s Carolyn Crayton Park on September 27 injured 12 teenagers. Five suspects faced charges related to that shooting, including a 15-year-old charged as an adult, reported FOX 5 Atlanta. Macon is about 60 miles north of Vienna and 115 miles north of Douglas.
Ongoing Developments
The DPD noted that their investigation is still in progress, with anticipated additional details to be disclosed later on Saturday.
