Quarterback Challenges and Recovery Updates for Atlanta Falcons

35 minutes ago 0

The quarterback issues in Atlanta have captured significant attention in the NFL. After a challenging offseason with injuries and Cooper Rush handling quarterback duties for two weeks, Atlanta seemed to find some consistency when Michael Penix Jr. returned as the starter.

During Sunday’s intense game against the Baltimore Ravens, Penix suffered a rib injury due to a sack. Although he briefly returned before the game concluded, he wasn’t able to play in overtime. This led to Tua Tagovailoa stepping in, who then threw a game-ending interception. The uncertainty surrounding Penix’s participation in the Week 6 clash with the Chicago Bears is a pressing concern.

Following an MRI earlier this week, Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski revealed Wednesday that Penix is expected to start in Sunday’s game unless any complications arise. Penix rejoined practice on Wednesday, albeit in a limited capacity.

Stefanski refrained from detailing the severity of Penix’s rib injury, merely noting that the quarterback is “feeling better.” ESPN’s Adam Schefter mentioned on “The Pat McAfee Show” that Penix’s rib injury isn’t considered long-term.

The extent of Penix’s participation in practice this week remains based on his physical comfort, Stefanski remarked, emphasizing the importance of monitoring daily recovery. ESPn later reported that Penix had taken all the first-team reps during practice.

Penix assured reporters he felt good at practice, adding, “I just gotta stay on top of my rehab and make sure I’m doing all the right things.” He confirmed his readiness for the upcoming week, highlighting his recovery plan.

Penix’s injury history is notable, particularly with an ACL injury last November that necessitated surgery and sidelined him for the Falcons’ initial games this season.

Meanwhile, Bears star Caleb Williams’ status for Sunday’s game in Atlanta remains in question due to a hamstring injury that caused him to miss recent games. Bears head coach Ben Johnson indicated Williams is a full participant in the latest injury report.
