Raiders May Consider Trading for Jaguars’ Brian Thomas Jr.

Kirk Cousins currently leads the Las Vegas Raiders as their starting quarterback. However, the team has pinned its future hopes on first overall draft pick Fernando Mendoza. Mendoza recently made his NFL debut during a 45-17 loss to the New England Patriots, completing six of eight passes for 48 yards in the final minutes.

As Mendoza prepares to step into his role as the main QB, he will require a more robust set of offensive weapons than what the Raiders currently possess. Presently, three of the team’s top four receivers are players typically not known for deep-field catching. Tight ends Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer, along with running back Ashton Jeanty, have been pivotal, but the roster lacks a standout wide receiver.

The leading receiver, Tre Tucker, has amassed 19 catches for 274 yards and scored one touchdown in five games. While consistent, Tucker does not fit the profile of a top-tier NFL wide receiver. This shortcoming is why Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report suggests the Raiders explore trade options to strengthen their lineup.

Knox proposes the Raiders investigate acquiring Brian Thomas Jr. from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Thomas, once a standout rookie, has seen his role diminish in Jacksonville. Knox argues that a trade similar to the one Arizona completed for Marvin Harrison Jr., which involved receiving second- and sixth-round draft picks, might tempt the Jaguars to part with Thomas.

Though originally a revelation, Thomas has lost prominence as rookie receiver Josh Cameron shows promise with 117 yards and two touchdowns. Knox believes Jacksonville might be open to trading Thomas for the right offer.

Trading for Thomas, who is only 24 and had a stellar rookie season with 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns, could prove beneficial for the Raiders. He offers more potential than what the Raiders are likely to secure with a 2027 second-round draft pick, considering the options available in that draft year.
