Rep. Ro Khanna Criticizes Democrats’ Approach to Working-Class Voters

1 month ago 0

Rep. Ro Khanna, a Democrat from California, expressed concerns that the Democratic Party has failed to resonate with working-class voters. He attributes this to the party’s frequent support for ‘status quo establishment candidates’ who do not challenge the existing economic system. Khanna shared these thoughts during an appearance on ‘Meet the Press’ after a Democratic National Committee (DNC) report reviewed the party’s struggles in the 2024 elections.

Khanna highlighted the shortcomings of the current economic structure, stating, ‘We do need to recognize that the status quo has failed. This is a system that has created massive inequality.’ He emphasized that the economy remains unfair and inadequate for many working- and middle-class Americans.

The Democratic report suggested the party had concentrated too much on winning arguments, unlike Republicans, who focused on winning elections. Khanna rejected the notion of forgoing logical debate but acknowledged the need for a potent economic message targeting financially struggling voters.

Reflecting on Vice President Kamala Harris, Khanna commented on the report’s findings that the White House did not enhance her profile enough before Democrats changed nominees. He remarked that Harris’ focus on economic policies in crucial states like Pennsylvania and Michigan might have improved Democratic outcomes.

Looking ahead, Khanna stressed the importance of engaging with working-class voters, stating, ‘We need to have an economic message that actually is talking to the working-class folks who have been shafted, and that’s taking on a system that has been rigged.’

During the interview, Khanna defended DNC Chair Ken Martin against calls for his resignation. He praised Martin’s opposition to super PACs in primaries and his stance against superdelegates selecting nominees. ‘Ken Martin is a Paul Wellstone Democrat,’ Khanna noted, underscoring his agreement with Martin’s positions.

Khanna acknowledged that the autopsy report process could have been better handled but rejected the idea of Martin’s resignation. He emphasized the need for Martin to work closely with state parties to ensure their funding through the upcoming election cycles.

The DNC commissioned the report after Democratic losses in 2024. It faced internal disagreements and delays before its release, highlighting ongoing political challenges within the party.
