A group of villagers in central Laos remains trapped in a cave, sparking a race against time for rescuers. Heavy rainfall last week triggered flash floods, blocking the exit of the cave located in Xaisomboun province.
The affected villagers entered the cave on May 19 in search of gold. According to rescue teams from Laos and Thailand, the unexpected floods have hindered their escape.

Bounkham Luanglath, leader of Laos’ Rescue Volunteer for People, noted that one individual managed to escape before the floods blocked the exit. This person alerted authorities of the situation. The conditions of the remaining seven individuals remain unknown at this time.
He explained that the cave, a site often frequented by villagers seeking gold, poses significant dangers. Authorities have consistently cautioned locals against entering due to safety risks.
Thai rescue teams arrived on-site Sunday to assist in the efforts. Divers are currently navigating through the flooded sections of the cave, attempting to locate the trapped group.
The Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not commented on the situation. The country’s government, a one-party communist state, is known for tightly controlling information.
