Salah Leads Egypt to Historic World Cup Victory

1 week ago 0

Mohamed Salah approached the 2026 FIFA men’s World Cup with determination and focus. He emphasized the need to concentrate on training and making Egyptian fans proud during an interview with ESPN. Salah’s outlook might have been shaped by Egypt’s challenging history in World Cup tournaments.

In 2017, Salah scored the goal that secured Egypt a spot in the World Cup for the first time since 1990. However, their 2018 World Cup campaign was disappointing as they lost all three group stage matches in Russia. Egypt failed to qualify in 2022. Now, in what may be his final World Cup, Salah rekindled hope with an outstanding performance against New Zealand in Vancouver on June 21.

During the match, New Zealand took an early lead with a 15th-minute goal by Finn Surman. Mostafa Zico then equalized for Egypt in the 58th minute. The game changed when Salah scored in the 67th minute and assisted Trezeguet’s goal in the 82nd minute, leading Egypt to a 3-1 victory. This win marked Egypt’s first-ever triumph in a World Cup match.

Salah expressed his pride, saying, “What happened today is history for us, as Egyptians. For other teams, winning games might be common, but for us, it’s rare.”

Egypt began their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Belgium, with Salah scoring once again. They now lead Group G with four points, a surprising development. Liverpool fans, who enjoyed Salah’s performances for nine years, are thrilled to see his success on the world stage. The team now has a high probability of advancing to the knockout stage, with “over a 99% chance,” according to The Athletic.

Egypt has advanced past the group stage only once before, in 1934. They aim to close out the group stage with a match against Iran in Seattle on June 26.
