Samsung introduced its first AI-powered glasses at the Galaxy Unpacked event in London, marking a new addition to its Galaxy lineup. The company showcased two frame designs, one from Gentle Monster and another from Warby Parker. These frames are designed to look like regular glasses, focusing on style and subtlety.
Reporters who tried the glasses noted their lightweight nature, with the internal electronics almost imperceptible. At a media roundtable, Samsung’s EVP and XR R&D head, James Choi, emphasized that comfort and all-day wearability are crucial for smart glasses. Heavy frames can detract from style and functionality.
Design Collaboration
The Gentle Monster design features a sleek, minimal look with thin arms and a uniform black color. Its top edge runs flat before gently curving down. In contrast, Warby Parker’s design offers warm brown tones with a slight upward curve along the brow, creating a versatile silhouette. Samsung and the designers focused on ensuring the frames sit comfortably on the forehead and ears, important for extended wear.
Features of the Glasses
The glasses have an audio-first approach with an included camera. Users interact through voice, touch, and gestures linked to a Galaxy Watch. The Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen1 chip manages processing, power efficiency, and heat.
Google Gemini powers the AI, offering functions like real-time navigation, language translation, and notification summaries. The camera allows users to share live views, capture notes, and translate text in real-time.
Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem at Google, stated: “Google and Samsung aim to integrate intelligence into daily life. Built on the Android XR platform, the eyewear combines design with Gemini’s assistance, offering all-day help hands-free.”
Battery and Availability
The glasses offer a nine-hour battery life. The charging case supports seven additional full charges. While Samsung has confirmed a fall launch in select markets, pricing remains unannounced. A price range of $379 to $499 has been rumored but not confirmed.
The partnerships with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker may enhance distribution through their retail networks, offering a practical advantage beyond specifications. Samsung’s MX COO, Won-Joon Choi, highlighted the goal of integrating AI assistance seamlessly into daily moments, betting on the frames being appealing even when the AI isn’t actively engaged.
