Navy officials are updating the public on the search for Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards, a missing US Navy aircrewman. He disappeared after an emergency water landing in the Arabian Sea by an MH-60S helicopter from the USS George H.W. Bush.

The helicopter crash occurred on July 1. Of the four crew members, three were successfully rescued. Cmdr. Edwards, who was the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5 (HSC-5), remains missing. The search continued for more than 102 hours and covered over 14,000 square miles before being suspended.

Rear Adm. Todd Cimicata of Carrier Strike Group 10 expressed his sympathies:

The thoughts and prayers of every member of the Carrier Strike Group 10 team are with the Edwards family. While we are far from home, our heartfelt support remains at your side. Gabe’s legacy as a husband, father, friend, and fearless leader will never be forgotten.

Cmdr. Edwards, who graduated from Norfolk State University in 2006, had been serving in the Navy since earning his Wings of Gold in 2008. He became the leader of HSC-5 in July 2025.

According to Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao, Edwards will be posthumously promoted to captain. His widow, Rebecca Edwards, released a statement saying: Gabe has dedicated his life to serving his country with honor, courage, and commitment. He led with humility, integrity, and compassion, always putting his people before himself.

The squadron, part of a deployment aboard the USS George H.W. Bush in the Middle East, is receiving support from mental health professionals and chaplains. The Navy is investigating the cause of the accident, stating there is no evidence of hostile action being involved.
