Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania is gaining attention as a Democrat known for diverging from his party on significant issues. Yet, he continues to align predominantly with the Democratic leadership in the Senate. Since taking office in 2023, Fetterman has sided with Democrats in nearly 90% of votes.
Fetterman’s approach is noteworthy during this era of intense partisanship. He has publicly disagreed with his party on subjects like the Iranian conflict and immigration while maintaining a high voting alignment with Senate Democrats. His voting record mirrors other strong party supporters within the caucus, leading to speculation about a potential party switch.
“John Fetterman is a staunch Democrat that votes with his party 96% of the time,” a senior Republican aide stated, expressing doubt about any party switch.
Fetterman hinted at a potential departure from the Democratic Party if it continued to oppose Israel, though he has not switched parties. Some Republicans doubt Fetterman will leave the Democrats despite ongoing rumors. His decision about running for another term remains uncertain.
Fetterman’s political journey started with Bernie Sanders’ endorsement in his pivotal 2022 race against Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania. Sanders described Fetterman as a candidate dedicated to working-class representation.
Fetterman’s early victory contributed to a slim Democratic majority in the Senate and marked him as a prominent party figure. However, he gradually distanced himself from Sanders’ ideals and more frequently opposed the caucus leadership, reaching an 81% alignment with Democrats this year.
He is reportedly tapping into Republican fundraising while maintaining friendships with GOP figures, like Sen. Katie Britt. Fetterman recently made a public appearance supporting a Republican candidate, even mistakenly labeling himself a Republican at a recent event.
When questioned about his potential party change, Fetterman has become more reserved, avoiding questions in the Senate hallways. He highlights the lack of Republican figures with similar Democratic voting records, pro-choice, or pro-LGBTQ+ stances.
Fetterman has stated, “There are no Republicans with a 90% Democratic vote line.” As the midterms approach, he encourages people to observe the outcomes, emphasizing his significance in maintaining a Democratic Senate majority.
Fetterman’s office did not provide a comment on these matters. The ongoing discussion about his political allegiance continues to intrigue observers.
