On Saturday evening, a shooting occurred near the White House, resulting in two people being wounded, according to law enforcement sources. The incident took place at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Between 15 to 30 gunshots were reportedly fired.
CBS News reporters on the scene reported hearing gunfire around 6 p.m. ET. Following this, the U.S. Secret Service quickly moved them inside the White House complex for safety. The lockdown at the White House has since been lifted, and the media were allowed back onto the North Lawn.
Of those wounded, one was a suspect, and the other was possibly a bystander. Both were transported to a hospital, with the suspect in critical condition and the other person in serious condition. Sources noted it appears Secret Service agents might have been targeted during the shooting but were unharmed. Agents reportedly returned fire, leading to multiple gunshots during the confrontation. Several Secret Service officers were assessed at the scene and confirmed to be unharmed.
