Tensions Flare in Youth Softball Game Amid Umpire Dispute

7 days ago 0

Two youth girls’ softball teams faced a Father’s Day weekend they will long remember after tensions rose during their game. The incident occurred at the USSSA Wood Grill Buffet/Everett Classic in Benton, Arkansas. A foul ball call by the first base umpire led to a chaotic scene involving a coach and an umpire in front of the young players.

This particular incident differed from others this season as some witnesses claim the umpire triggered the situation. It unfolded in the top of the fourth inning with Arkansas Pride 12 (13U) leading Tulsa Elite NEA (14U) 7-2. With a full count pitch, a Pride player hit a ball down the first base line, but the umpire immediately called it foul.

The Pride coach disagreed with the call, sparking a heated exchange. After approaching the home plate umpire, the coach confronted the first base umpire. The confrontation escalated with the two exchanging shoves.

In a statement, the Tulsa Elite coaching staff clarified that their team remained in the dugout during the incident. They stated, “At no time did we have players running around the field. Furthermore, all parents stayed on the sidelines except one, who helped to de-escalate the situation.”

Across the U.S., rising tensions in baseball and softball have coincided with a decline in the number of umpires. A 2023 national survey revealed that 69% of sports officials believe sportsmanship is deteriorating. Alarmingly, one in eight officials reported being assaulted during or after games.

The Tulsa Elite staff expressed disappointment in the behavior, stating, “This type of behavior is unfortunate for our sport, and we are not here to take sides or place blame. The video speaks for itself.”

They added, “When we were informed that our parents would have to leave, I made the decision to forfeit and remove our team. My priority is the safety and well-being of our players, and I deemed it the best decision at that time.”

OutKick’s request for a statement from the USSSA Arkansas state director remains unanswered.
