President Donald Trump successfully secured the release of Marine veteran Robert Gilman from a Russian prison without involving a prisoner swap. This event marks a change in U.S. hostage diplomacy.
Video and photos emerged showing Gilman back on American soil after his release from Russian custody. Arrested on January 17, 2022, in Voronezh, Russia, Gilman had been sentenced to 10 years. He was released on humanitarian grounds after spending 1,666 days in prison. Gilman’s first request upon landing at Andrews Air Force Base was for a cheeseburger.
Sebastian Gorka, a deputy assistant to the president, confirmed Gilman’s safe return, noting that cheeseburgers and milkshakes were provided as promised. U.S. special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and Gorka greeted Gilman upon his arrival. Witkoff provided a USMC flag, highlighting the administration’s commitment to bringing Americans home.
Gilman, a U.S. citizen and former Marine, initially faced a sentence for assaulting a police officer in 2022. His sentence was extended following further allegations of assault within the prison system. Despite these complications, the U.S. State Department categorized him as a wrongful detainee.
The case follows similar events involving U.S. Marines in Russia, such as Paul Whelan in 2018 and Trevor Reed in 2019. Both were eventually released through prisoner swaps. In contrast, Gilman’s release involved no exchange.
President Trump communicated with President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing the humanitarian nature of the release. Trump expressed gratitude for Russia’s decision not to demand a prisoner in return. Gilman was reunited with his mother, Nancy, and looked forward to seeing his family.
