Trump Calls for Permanent Daylight Saving Time

3 days ago 0

President Donald Trump has called on Congress to approve the Sunshine Protection Act, asserting that it could lower crime rates. Since World War One, the United States has followed Daylight Saving Time (DST), where clocks are advanced during warmer months to extend evening daylight. The tradition of turning clocks back in the fall to return to standard time has continued in most parts of the country.

The House approved the measure in mid-July, with 308 lawmakers supporting and 117 opposing. It now awaits Senate consideration. If passed, the president is eager to enact it into law.

“For many years, most Americans have wanted permanent Daylight Saving Time, but no administration has managed it until now,” Trump stated in a Truth Social post. “I am proud to announce the House has passed the bill and it is now before the Senate for final approval.”

He continued by citing various studies indicating that eliminating the biannual time change and adding an hour of evening sunlight could:

  • Decrease robbery and murder rates
  • Reduce car accidents, especially involving pedestrians
  • Lower risks for cardiac issues, stroke, and seasonal depression
  • Make it safer for children walking home from school
  • Provide more family time
  • Support extracurricular activities
  • Boost sports, fitness, tourism, retail, and restaurant industries
  • Save on energy bills due to increased daylight usage

Trump emphasized the universal appeal of the measure, urging unity among Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. “I am asking Republican Senators to pass the Sunshine Protection Act, ASAP,” he concluded.

This story is still unfolding and updates will continue.
