President Donald Trump has called for a change in leadership in Ukraine, urging the replacement of President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump’s comments come in the wake of what he viewed as missed opportunities by Zelensky to negotiate an end to the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump expressed frustration with Zelensky, highlighting his failure to make deals that could have stopped the war. Trump’s remarks are his strongest indication yet of his desire for Zelensky to be replaced.
The criticism intensified after Ukraine executed an attack on a significant Russian oil hub, directly contradicting Trump’s warning to avoid targeting Russian refineries. This development escalated tensions, especially after Trump’s recent diesel agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Several Republican lawmakers are concerned that Trump’s deal with Putin might inadvertently support Russia’s war efforts. The attack on the oil refinery has added strain to Trump and Zelensky’s already tense relationship.
Trump had advised Zelensky against striking refineries, citing the global implications on diesel fuel supplies. He emphasized the negative impact such strikes could have on American agricultural sectors and worldwide consumers.
“You can do whatever you want to Russia. Don’t hit these refineries because that’s a world problem,” Trump stated. “Russia supplies a large portion of the diesel fuel throughout the world.”
Despite Ukraine targeting Russian oil infrastructure to weaken Moscow’s war capacity, the strike goes against Trump’s explicit warnings. Trump has been vocal about how Zelensky’s actions could globally affect fuel availability.
Trump’s recent statements underscore his belief that Zelensky has hindered peace efforts, claiming that various peace opportunities were disregarded.
“Zelensky could have settled this war many times, many, many times, and he chooses not to,” Trump remarked. He firmly believes the conflict would not have started under his presidency, blaming incompetence for its initiation.
Trump’s direct calls for Zelensky’s replacement follow previous disputes, including a confrontation in February 2025, where Trump accused Zelensky of disrespect and canceled planned agreements.
Despite efforts to improve relations, Trump’s recent deal with Putin aimed at reducing fuel prices was immediately undermined by Ukraine’s strike on Russian oil infrastructure. He had personally warned Zelensky about refinery attacks.
Ukraine’s government maintains that targeting Russian energy structures is legitimate, as these resources fuel war efforts against them.
“He’s not going to affect our farmers, and he’s not going to affect our ranchers, and he’s not going to affect the rest of the world,”Trump emphasized. “He’s better damn well stop.”
Professor Margarita Balmaceda from Seton Hall University cautioned that the diesel deal might primarily benefit Russia, furthering its war efforts against Ukraine. She highlighted concerns about Russia’s long-standing strategy of offering low prices to gain leverage.
Trump and Putin’s relationship, scrutinized over Russian electoral interference and Trump’s diplomatic strategies, sees Trump touting his personal rapport with Putin as beneficial, despite stalled negotiations.
Trump continues to engage both sides but attributes the war’s persistence to Zelensky’s actions. Zelensky’s potential replacement would depend on Ukraine’s electoral and constitutional processes.
Trump’s call for new leadership may provoke further discourse on Washington’s stance toward Kyiv and potentially tie U.S. support to Ukraine’s compliance with energy infrastructure-related requests.
