President Donald Trump has labeled The New York Times’ reporting on the conflict with Iran as “treasonous,” indicating an intention to include it in his lawsuit against the publication. Trump expressed his views on his Truth Social platform, criticizing the “Corrupt and Failing New York Times” for what he describes as “FAKE & MADE UP ‘FACTS.”
He stated, “I will be adding all of their false and ridiculous reporting to my multi Billion Dollar lawsuit against them. They are Criminals!” Trump’s comments follow his history of disputing with reporters and news outlets since returning to office.
In September, Trump filed a $15 billion defamation lawsuit against the Times, although a judge rejected it, calling the complaint “tedious and burdensome.” Subsequently, Trump submitted a revised 40-page complaint in October to the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida. This lawsuit names The New York Times, publisher Penguin Random House, investigative reporters Suzanne Craig and Russ Buettner, and Peter Baker, the newspaper’s chief White House correspondent, among the defendants.
Trump’s recent remarks were in response to a Times analysis suggesting that, strategically, the conflict had changed little. In contrast, Trump claimed Iran’s military and economy were severely debilitated. The Times has dismissed Trump’s lawsuit as meritless and an effort to suppress independent reporting.
In another Sunday post, Trump criticized a Times article titled “What Changed After Almost 4 Months of War? Analysts Say Not Much.” He asserted, “REALLY? Their Military is DONE, their Navy is GONE, their Air Force is GONE, their Launching Pads, Missiles, Drones and Manufacturing of same, is almost GONE, their top two sets of Leaders are GONE, their Inflation is at 250%, their Economy is BROKEN, their Soldiers aren’t being paid, the Hormuz Strait is OPEN, THE OIL IS GUSHING, and the U.S. Stock Market and Jobs are at record HIGHS.”
Trump concluded with, “That’s what’s CHANGED, you corrupt and unethical cowards, and MORE!!!” Efforts to contact attorneys for both Trump and The New York Times were made by Newsweek outside regular office hours on Monday.
In the past, Trump has filed lawsuits against ABC News and CBS News’ 60 Minutes, both of which were settled out of court. He also took legal action against The Wall Street Journal and its owner, Rupert Murdoch, following a report on his connections to Jeffrey Epstein.
This situation is ongoing, and further developments are anticipated.
