President Donald Trump introduced a newly revamped Air Force One jet on Friday. The aircraft, dubbed the “VC-25B Bridge,” is a modified Boeing 747 jumbo jet, provided to the United States by Qatar. This airliner recently underwent a $400 million upgrade to equip it with advanced defense systems and secure communications.
The aircraft was revealed at a new hangar at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. It now features a design in dark blue, red, and gold, personally selected by Trump, replacing the previous light blue Kennedy-era design. The U.S. Air Force noted that the jet will undergo initial flights before it begins its presidential duties. Trump has planned for this new Air Force One to participate in a flyover in Washington, D.C., on July 4.
What is the VC-25B Bridge Jet?
This jet is a specially modified Boeing 747-8i, initially designed for the Qatari royal family. Unlike traditional presidential aircraft, the Air Force prioritized keeping the existing luxury interior to speed up the process. The plane’s luxury features include high-end wood paneling and leather lounges.
Trump remarked, “This plane was transformed into a flying White House at a level of luxury that nobody has ever seen before.”
Upgrades and New Appearance
L3Harris Technologies performed an extensive military overhaul on the aircraft. The upgrades included anti-missile systems, weather resistance, and encrypted satellite communications. The jet’s new color scheme—navy blue with red stripes and a white top—was championed by Trump, aligning with his previous personal plane’s color pattern. Although President Joe Biden once halted this design, Trump reinstated it after returning to office. Other government planes used by officials will adopt similar colors.
Trump intends to use this aircraft for upcoming trips, including to the NATO summit in Turkey and possibly China for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
Financial and Political Implications
While Qatar gifted the jet, the retrofit expenses caused debates. Initial estimates put the security upgrades at $400 million, but reports surfaced of a $934 million fund transfer from a classified missile program to cover the costs. This spending raised concerns from lawmakers about fiscal responsibility.
Additionally, accepting a high-value gift from a foreign government prompted scrutiny regarding the Foreign Emoluments Clause. Critics, including Senator Patty Murray, claim the deal violates constitutional principles. Despite this, Trump defended the agreement, arguing it benefits the nation. Legal provisions allow for future transfer of ownership to Trump’s presidential library foundation.
An Air Force official clarified that current presidential aircraft, the VC-25As, will also remain active. This allows for mission-specific aircraft choices.
Trump emphasized the need for the U.S. to be properly represented globally.
