Trump’s Remarks on Oman Sparks Diplomatic Tensions

President Donald Trump recently made headlines with his statement about potentially “blowing up” Oman if it doesn’t “behave,” highlighting a rift with one of the United States’ key partners in the Middle East. This remark came during a Cabinet meeting as Trump addressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil passes, open for international navigation.

The Trump administration opposed any discussions that might lead to Iran and Oman jointly managing the strait, as such an arrangement might endanger free navigation and increase Tehran’s influence.

The Strait of Hormuz is vital due to its strategic location connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea. The administration voiced concerns that Iran might charge tolls or fees in this critical waterway.

“The strait’s gotta be open to everybody,” Trump stated. “It’s international waters. Nobody’s going to control it. We’ll watch over it, but nobody’s going to control it.”

Located at the southeastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman has long maintained a unique foreign policy. It balances close ties with the U.S. while maintaining relations with Iran. This dual positioning allows Oman to serve as an intermediary between Washington and Tehran.

Oman’s historical role as a mediator is emphasized through its efforts in diplomatic discussions between the U.S., Iran, and actors in Yemen. Nevertheless, its actions sometimes draw scrutiny, especially concerning alleged weapons smuggling and financial incentives tied to regional unrest.

Despite current tensions, the longstanding relationship between the U.S. and Oman remains significant, with ties dating back over a century. Observers like Daniel Beinam from the Middle East Institute stress the depth of this partnership despite present disagreements.

Michael Rubin from the Middle East Forum expressed concern not only with the current strait debate but also with Oman’s broader diplomatic dealings, comparing it to Qatar in its regional orientation.
