In Belfast, Northern Ireland, police used water cannons to control protesters who set small fires and threw various objects during a second night of violence. The unrest followed a stabbing incident on a Belfast street.
Protesters wore masks and dismantled structures to create projectiles. They used bricks, rocks, and sections of fences to target riot police. This chaos erupted after Hadi Alodid, a 30-year-old Sudanese man, appeared in court. He faced charges of attempted murder after allegedly blinding Stephen Ogilvie during a stabbing. Alodid was also charged with possessing a knife and making threats.
The violence affected numerous families. Masked men set fire to homes believed to house immigrants. Firefighters rescued people, including families with children, from burning buildings. Many were left homeless due to the attacks.
Belfast resident Anselme Shima witnessed smoke from the fires near his home. Fearing for his safety, he expressed concern for his community. The Police Service of Northern Ireland increased patrols and sought additional support from other forces, anticipating further unrest.
Stephen Ogilvie’s family urged for peace, emphasizing the valuable contributions of migrants. Political leaders condemned the violence. First Minister Michelle O’Neill called the acts “thuggery,” while Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly criticized taking out frustrations on innocent people.
Video footage of the attack circulated online and fueled anti-immigration sentiment. Ogilvie sustained severe injuries and was hospitalized. Police confirmed Alodid entered Northern Ireland from the Republic of Ireland and had applied for asylum.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned both the stabbing and the subsequent violence. Justice Minister Naomi Long criticized social media agitators for exploiting fears.
The incident reignited discussions about the open border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. This border is crucial to the peace process that ended “The Troubles,” a conflict that left thousands dead.
Meanwhile, a separate case in England involving the murder of a university student, Henry Nowak, also sparked protests. These events have further fueled debates around immigration and violence in the UK.
