Bill Clinton, aligned with the Democratic Party, served as the 42nd President of the United States from 1993 to 2001. Born William Jefferson Blythe III on August 19, 1946, he faced early adversity with the death of his father, William Jefferson Blythe II, in a car accident before Clinton’s birth. His mother, Virginia Cassidy Blythe, pursued nursing studies, leaving Clinton with his grandparents during her education.
Clinton’s academic journey led him to Georgetown University, followed by a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford University. He later completed a law degree at Yale University in 1973. In 1975, he married Hillary Rodham.
Clinton’s political career began in Arkansas. After initially losing a congressional bid in 1974, he was elected as the state’s attorney general in 1976. Two years later, he became governor of Arkansas, though he lost his reelection attempt. He and Hillary welcomed their daughter, Chelsea, in 1980. Clinton returned to the governorship in 1984, laying the groundwork for his national ambitions.
Launching his presidential campaign, Clinton defeated Republican George H.W. Bush and independent Ross Perot in the 1992 election alongside his running mate, Albert Gore Jr. He won a second term in 1996, overcoming Republican Bob Dole and Perot once more.
Clinton’s presidency noted achievements such as high homeownership and the creation of 22 million jobs alongside low unemployment. However, his time in office was overshadowed by controversy. An affair with Monica Lewinsky, a former White House intern, led to Clinton’s impeachment on December 19, 1998. The charges were perjury before a grand jury and obstruction of justice.
After leaving office, Clinton remained politically active. He supported Democratic figures, including Hillary Clinton during her 2008 and 2016 presidential campaigns. He authored books like “My Life,” “Back to Work,” and “Citizen: My Life After the White House,” sharing insights from his years in public service. His family includes grandchildren Charlotte, Aidan, and Jasper.
